Penske Finishes Incredible Season; Kanaan Says Acura Can Beat Porsche in 2008

Date October 24, 2007

The RS Spyders of Team Penske didn’t take the overall win at Laguna Seca in the final race of the season, but Romain Dumas’ RS Spyder finished the race only 0.41 seconds behind Dindo Capello’s Audi R10. The Penske LMP2 RS Spyders won eight overall races — all in a row — over the supposedly faster LMP1 Audis, and easily winning the driver, team, chassis and engine manufacturer titles in LMP2.

Penske Racing president Tim Cindric has this to say:

It’s been a wonderful season, and this one-two class finish – the 11th win in 12 races – brings back the glory days of the Porsche 917/30 for both Porsche and Penske Racing. It’s been a huge honor to be a part of this program, and we believe this puts the exclamation point on a season which will put the Porsche RS Spyder right with the 917 in Porsche racing history.

Meanwhile, Tony Kanaan, who finished third in the Andretti Green Racing Acura, has said that he believes Acura are capable to taking the fight to the dominant Porsche RS Spyders in 2008.

In the GT2 class, Risi Competizione and Ferrari ended Porsche’s dominance of the driver and team titles over the past five years. Jamie Melo and Mika Salo claimed the drivers’ title, while Risi claimed the team title. Next year should be very interesting as Panoz, Corvette, Viper, and even a Ford GT will join the GT2 class battle Porsche and Ferrari.

I’m already counting down the days to the opening race.
