Porsche-built VW Vanagon
April 27, 2008

This is something I never knew. Back in the mid-1980s, when Porsche was racing the Gruppe B 959 in the Paris to Dakar Rally, they built some sweet VW Vanagons as support vehicles.
Starting with a VW Type 2 Transporter, Porsche stuck a 3.2 liter 911 engine in the back, producing 230 hp. This could propel the Vanagon to a top speed of over 130 mph. Which had to have been scary. They also upgraded the suspension, brakes, and interiors.
Supposedly eleven of these uber-Vanagons were built. What are the chances of finding one today?
