Proposed CAFE Rules May Hurt Porsche
May 8, 2008

New NHTSA proposed fuel economy rules may hit small, niche automakers like Porsche. Under the new proposal, there would be two sliding scales of efficiency for cars and trucks of different sizes. Fuel economy standards would be assigned to automakers based on the “footprint” of their vehicles, so a short wheelbase vehicle means a small footprint. Companies like Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz would be hit the hardest.
Industry execs expect some automakers, such as Porsche, to just pay the fines, since it would be cheaper than changing their model line-up. Regulators need to adopt a policy by April 1, 2009, and the NHTSA is taking public comments over the next two months.
